Art Installation are set up!

We are Masquerading
As a project for the grade 12 art class, the students had to change a space in the school to create a message. The messages including; We are masquerading, We are Underestimating, We are Defenseless, We are Rebellious, We are obliviously, and We are Neglected.

We are Defenseless
The art students set up these installation in main parts of the school including, the office, cafeteria, and library.

When asked why is this theme project important for the students of KDSS, Shelby Boyd states " they enlighten the students are the world around us", "the world is a crazy place and these projects show students the reality of it." says grade 12 students Maxine Pasley.
We are Rebellious

Students of KDSS are yet again showing how talented they are! Good job guys!

Knights Support Diabetes Research

Grade 12 students Emily Brolese and Rebecca Cowie walked around to classes on Friday January 13 and Wednesday January 18 for their Leadership class culminating project. They raised awareness and money to help find the cure for Juvenile Diabetes. Rebecca first contacted the JDRF (Juvilene Diabetes Research Foundation) and they sent the the duo a package with paper sneakers, silly bands, pamphlets and calendars. They gathered a group of supporting students including AJ Adams, Mickey Collins, Josiah Chalmers, Meagan MacDonald and Katie Morris to help going class to class. Emily put up posters up around the school to let people know they were coming around to homeroom classrooms.

The girls had great from staff and students of KDSS and raised $252.66 and were able to put up 76 shoes in the grade 11 hallway.

Emily and Rebecca would like to thank everyone for their support and they very much appreciated teacehrs allowing us to come around to home room classes!

KDSS now has a new sign!

As a part of KDSS's new campaign: Operation Re-Cool the School, (fixing up the school and adding more spirit!), KDSS now has a new digital message sign out front of the building.

The new electronic sign!

The old sign was an old dated standard sign with holes in it.

The new sign being assembled!
The new sign was created and designed by J&D Sign. The new sign will displays many messages for the school. Dates for sporting events, dances, spirit days and many other events will be displayed on this new sign!

Paint brushes can finally be put down.

The KDSS grade 12 art students can finally say the words "I'm Done!".  Assigned every year as the culminating activity for the Grade 12 art class, the art canvas is a long and tedious task for all students to complete.

Each student put in about roughly 50 hours of painting the canvas.

"It was alot of hard work but it all paid off" art student Shelby Boyd mentioned.

"This gives the students a right of passage for grade 12 art" says KDSS Art Teacher Cati Van Veen.

This took alot of time, devotion and skill to do. All of the canvases turned out amazing! We are very proud to have these students in our school!

Keep Up the Great Work!

Support Janelle's Trip to Kenya with Free the Children

Janelle Taylor is an 18 year old KDSS student who has been committed to Free the Children for many years. Since Grade 4, she has dreamed of going to Kenya, and this July she will have her chance. With your help, she will be able to raise money for this trip. We are very proud of Janelle for going on a trip like this! It's not every day that a youth of today wants to go to a third world country and help people in this way!

Above: Janelle Taylor (wearing purple, front row) and fellow Free the Children Members pose for a photo with Free the Children founder, Craig Kielburger.

FIRST Robotics Season has now been Kicked Off

On Saturday January 7 2012, the KDSS FIRST® robotics team travelled to the Bruce Power Visitor's Centre to learn what challenges they will face during this year's 2012 season. The students watch a live webcast from Manchester, New Hampshire with speakers including Presidents; George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, President of Coca Cola Muhtar Kent, Will.I.am from the Black Eyed Peas, and more. Of course FIRST Robotics icons Woodie Flowers and Dean Kamen spoke to the world about how FIRST Robotics is changing the world and it's culture to being more a science and technologically based.
After the speeches the students finally watched the game animation. The 2012 challenge is a basketball themed game called Rebound Rumble™. The teams have 6 weeks to design and construct a robot that can shoot compressed foam basketballs into 4 different hoops. The robots also have to be able to balance on a see-saw like bridge at the end of the game. A "Hybrid" mode is introduced that involves Microsoft®'s Xbox Kinect™ where the a human player controls the robot with the Kinect™.

Watch the video on the right to learn more about the 2012 challenge!
