On Saturday January 7 2012, the KDSS FIRST® robotics team travelled to the Bruce Power Visitor's Centre to learn what challenges they will face during this year's 2012 season. The students watch a live webcast from Manchester, New Hampshire with speakers including Presidents; George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, President of Coca Cola Muhtar Kent, Will.I.am from the Black Eyed Peas, and more. Of course FIRST Robotics icons Woodie Flowers and Dean Kamen spoke to the world about how FIRST Robotics is changing the world and it's culture to being more a science and technologically based.After the speeches the students finally watched the game animation. The 2012 challenge is a basketball themed game called Rebound Rumble™. The teams have 6 weeks to design and construct a robot that can shoot compressed foam basketballs into 4 different hoops. The robots also have to be able to balance on a see-saw like bridge at the end of the game. A "Hybrid" mode is introduced that involves Microsoft®'s Xbox Kinect™ where the a human player controls the robot with the Kinect™.
