Intramural floor hockey comes to an end!

Bleachers Filled With Students
During the past week at KDSS the hallways and cafeteria have been empty.  But where have the students been? In the bleachers of the gym of course! During the lunch hour, students watched as the first ever intramural floor hockey tournament occurred. 12 teams played in the tournament. With teams made up of everyone in the school from grade 9s to 5th years.

Kristen Derksen & Scotty Smith
The Floor Hockey Tournament was run and organized by Scotty Smith & Kristen Derksen (Grade 11 students). The grade 11 Leadership class's culminating activity is to run and organize a school or community event. Derksen & Smith teamed up their leadership skills and passion for the game of hockey and created this excellent intramural event. This event didn't only benefit Scotty and Kristen but the student body as well. It brought roughly half to the school together as they watched willingly in the bleachers during the lunch hour. The game it's self helped out by promoting being active, instead of sitting around during the lunch hour.

Winning Team - Slapshot Regotta
The games were held all week with the eliminations on Friday. At the end of this great event , there could   only be one winner! Congratulations goes to "Slapshot Regotta" for placing first! Team members include, Jacob Siekierski, Easton Battler, Brad Mangotich & Chris Beatie in net!

Congrats to all the other teams;
Sauce Bosses, Hawks, Nordiques, Snipers, Dust Bunnies, KDSS Jets, Honolulu Hockey Bags, Hungry Lions, Compton Saints, Minor Niners, and Death Scorpions

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who came out and watched the games and made this a great school activity!

No two snowflakes are alike!

Snow Flakes
As a part of the 12 Days of Knightsmas, Student Council handed out the snowflakes to students. As there are no two snowflakes alike, no two students are alike. Students wrote why they are an individual on the snowflakes and Student Council decorated the school with these snowflakes!

Santa Stopped by KDSS

Santa Claus

As a part of KDSS's annual 12 Days of "Knightsmas" (2 week long spirit event), Santa came for a visit to KDSS. Santa first stopped by some classrooms and gave the eager to learn students, some candy canes. During the lunch hour students were able to pay Santa a visit in the cafeteria. Santa listened to all of the students intenly as they told "The Jolly One" what they want for Christmas. Students were also able to get a picture with Mr. Claus. All of the photos can be found on KDSS's facebook page. Click here to see the photos.

Knights played well in London

The KDSS girls hockey team participate in the Lady Flames High School tournament in London the past 2 days. The Knights won first place in their pool on the strength of 2 wins and a tie during pool play. The first competition for the ladies was against St. Thomas Aquinas of Brampton. The ladies opened the tournament with gusto as they defeated the team from Brampton by a score of 8-0. Goal scorers were Hailey Allen with 2, with singles from Sara Gossell, Courtney Surridge, Hannah Davdison , Mikhayla Bowes, Samantha Stewart-Ault and Morgan Padfield. Assists went to Hannah Davidson, Hailey Allen and Sara Gossell with 3 each, Jessica Satosek with 2 and singles from Mikhayka Bowes, Carly Smith and Courtney Surridge. Natalie Melick took the win in net.

The second game for the Knights was against St. Mary’s of Kitchener. Hannah Davidson scored twice to make it a 2-0 game for KDSS. Assists went to Carly Smith with two, Sara Gossell and Hailey Allen with one each. Morgan Baker went the distance in net for this one.

The Girls Hockey Team
The final game of pool play pitted the Knights against Fogarty of Orillia. The Fogarty goalie made some excellent saves to keep the Knights off the scoreboard as did Morgan Baker at the other end. This contest ended up in a tie, but that was all KDSS needed to finish first in its pool.

The Knights then faced off against the strong St. Thomas Aquinas team of London, not the same team they met in pool play.

The Knights played an excellent game, but ended up on the short end of a 4-3 score. Hannah Davidson again led the scoring for the Knights with two goals while Sara Gossell added a single. Assists went to Gossell and Hailey Allen with two each, and Davidson and Laura Mangotich with one each. Natalie Melick played an excellent game between the pipes.

Congratulations ladies, on an excellent tournament.

The team travels to Owen Sound next Thursday for the final game before the Christmas break.

Free The Children Christmas Cards

Every year KDSS Free the Children holds a Christmas card campaign to raise funds for their efforts in Sierra Leone. The Cards are only $5 and all the proceeds go towards KDSS FTC's Adopt Village - Yomandu, Sierra Leone. Yomandu is the village in which KDSS Free the Children has built a school and two wells. This year all KDSS is raising money for the Alternative Income Project. By providing Yomandu with Alternative Income they will be able to survive long after Free the Children leaves Yomandu.

Next March (2012), students from the art history class will be touring the streets of Europe. The trip takes place over 13 days once the students leave the Pearson International Airport in Toronto on March 7 2012. The students will be touring Rome, Florence & Paris.

The purpose of the trip is to explore the art and architecture up close in addition to viewing them in the text book. The trip also promotes knowledge of culture and to study abroad.

This trip is a great experience however it comes at a price. The art history class is currently doing fundraisers to bring the cost down for the attendees. Currently, one of the fundraising campaigns are Christmas Cards that were designed by Grade 10 art students. They are 50 cents each or 5 for $2.

Christmas Cards Designs

The other current campaign is calendar sales. The calendars feature art by Grade 11 and 12 students, as well as the cover designed by Brian Roppell (a previous KDSS art student). The calendars are only $20 each. Orders will be taken at the "anti-T" in the hall at lunch from Tuesday Dec. 13 until Thursday Dec. 15. If you would like to place an order please see the students in the hall. Orders can also be placed in the art room; please see Mrs. VanVeen.

Calendars are available for purchase from the art history class until further notice.

All the proceeds for this fundraiser and future fundraisers will go towards the trip!
