The KDSS Knights have done it again! Another BAA title to their name! On Friday Feb 24th, the KDSS Boys Hockey team faced off against the Scared Heart Crusaders in the BAA Championship game!
The two teams were evenly matched as it seemed it would be a goalless first period until Paul Gill scored the first goal for the Crusaders. The Knights were determined to get ahead of their opponent. The boys put in all their might. With only 22.2 seconds on the clock KDSS Knight Chris Beattie (5th year student) scored a goal and evened the score to 1-1!
It was anyone's game when second period rolled around, until Riley Cook (Grade 10) assisted by Ryker Killins (grade 10) scored another goal for the Knights half way through the period! 2 -1 for the Knights!
Once the the zamboni clear the ice and the players hit the ice for the third and final period The Knights were determined to keep their spot as soon to winners. Goalie Easton Battler saved many shots in the game keeping the Knights in the lead. With just three minutes left in the game Ryker Killins scored the third and winning goal for the team!
With only 40 seconds on the clock, the last face off was played and the countdown began! The horn of the clock buzzed and the boys were ecstatic of their win! 2012 BAA Champions!

On February 16th, KDSS's OSAID (Ontario Student Against Impaired Driving) set up an obstacle course for students to come and test out Beer Googles. The students had to do various task like basketball and move through pylons on a scooter board with the darken goggles in order to see what it is like to do common task with impaired vision. This activity was fun for all who participated but at the same time it was a huge eye opener. If you can't do something as easy as shooting a basketball into a hoop then obviously you can't drive a car.
Thanks to the Kincardine O.P.P for proving the glasses!
Every year KDSS organizes a fundraising program to raise much needed funds. The money we earn helps to pay for ‘extras’ not covered by the school budget. We provide money for Campaigns: H&S, Robotics, Music, Outdoor Education Course, Environmental Sustainability Initiatives, Transportation, Trips, All Activities & Sports: VB, BB, H (please put sport initial by your name when ordering).
To reach our fundraising goal, we have chosen FUNDSCRIP.
FundScrip costs you nothing!

Instead of paying with cash or a debit card, you use a gift card that you purchased through our school. It costs you nothing extra but you just earned money for KDSS. You can use FundScrip cards to purchase your everyday essentials such as groceries, gas and clothing. You can even use them at restaurants or for a cup of coffee. Please go towww.findscrip.com/retailers to see the complete list of participating retailers.
How does FundScrip work?
All you have to do is buy gift cards from FundScrip for the stores where you already shop. You spend the gift cards just like cash and in the process, earn money for KDSS campaigns.
The gift cards are the retailers own cards that are swiped at the cash. The value of the purchase is automatically deducted from the value stored on the card. Any remaining balance can be used for future purchases.

On February 23rd, eight students headed to the Chesley Community Centre for a technology forum by the BWDSB. The big question at the forum was "How can technology best be used in our schools to drive your learning?".
Student lead discussion took place all day with some very interesting topics. Some of the topics that were mention were; Paperless classrooms, open-access wifi at school, smart boards for classrooms, a laptop or tablet (i.e.: iPad) for every student and more Bandwidth. Representatives from Microsoft were at the forum and spoke about how technology is changing and how the future and the world revolves around it.
Near the end of the meeting all of the students stood in a large circle and said any last point they had for the day. A member of the ICT department of the BWDSB announced that more Bandwidth will be provided to the schools of the BWDSB. More great news came when one of the directors of the BWDSB announced that within the next 6 months all computers in the school board will be updated to a Windows 7 operating system instead of the current Windows XP.
The students left the forum with lots of new ideas and input that will help not only the BWDSB but KDSS.
Technology is the future of education and the future is now! Can't wait for all the changes at KDSS in the near future!
On Thursday, February 16, 2012, the Kinetic Knights held an Open House to unveil the 2012 robot to the general public. the event was held at the Lake Huron Learning Collaborative building, and it was a success.
Tawny and Janelle pose in front of the team banner
The event started off by the public coming inside and touring the team, asking questions, and discussing topics. Then, the formal presentation was started. Our captains and some other mentors and members of the team spoke a little bit about the team and eased into the public viewing of the 2012 game video. Next, the moment everybody had been waiting for had arrived. The robot was unveiled. Of course, it wasn't perfect, and the build team will keep making adjustments until it is fully functional. Overall, the event was a huge success!
We were so impressed by how many people showed up to see our new robot in action! It was great to see all the community support! We hope everybody that attended had a great time! Now let's get ready for the competitions!

Boys Brave the cold to be spirited
Thanks to all the fans who came out! Thanks to Scotty Smith and friends for braving the cold to show your bare chested spirit!
Also, Congratulations to Myrannda Smythe (grade 9) for winning the raffle prize of an NHL, Toronto Maple Leafs jersey.
As you may all ready know, on Feb 29th, Grade 12 student Janine Van Veghal will be going bald! However, there is a catch, the student body has to raise $500! That may seem like a lot but really if you think of it, that’s only $1 a person.
Now you have two ways you can donate! You can either donate money into the cans around the school or now you can donate into the envelope in your homeroom class. The homeroom class that raises the most money will be given a cake of you choice. Chocolate, Vanilla, Lemon, Red Velvet, what ever you want!
Remember that the point of Go Bald or Go Home is not that a girl is shaving her head but where the money is going. Half of the proceeds are going to “Operation Re-Cool the School” an initiative by student council to make YOUR school a better learning environment and the other half is going to Kincardine’s Women’s House.
Shout out goes out to the boys who braved the cold of the ice rink today in spirit of the boys hockey team! The idea was thought up by grade 11 student Scotty Smith. Each Boy painted their body with green paint to spell the phrase "GO KNIGHTS". Thanks to Scotty as well as the following students for being "Proud to be A Knight" Thanks to; David McFarlan, Jamie Bate, Joel Easton, Cory Fair, Geordie Farrell, Cass Carruthers, Stuart Guadet, and Colten Hendrie.

In our fair school of KDSS, there are many fantastic places in which magic and wonder rule absolutely. The art room has brilliant works put out every semester from kids of every grade, the writer’s craft class puts together some of the best written work in the school and the drama students unleash dazzling performances with the utmost confidence.
But there is one room in which a different sort of greatness takes place. This is room 32, belonging to none other than Mr. Keith Colley. This is mainly the English media room, where films are analyzed, written, produced and yes, sometimes in black and white.
I speak as a student of Mr. Colley’s class and for many others this year, who strived to create an assortment of well produced films (Okay, most of us did). More specifically, our Final Films. These are the movies that we create for our culminating project. They are usually left up to our imagination for the most part, while incorporating things that we have learned over the course of the semester. I’m still not sure if this is brilliance on Mr. Colley’s part, or laziness. As a student, I am inclined to go with the former.
Right: Zombie themed final film by Mickey Collins - Forever
There were 9 films created in total for this project. 8 of them were viewed on opening day (exam period). As it turns out, the single film not shown was by none other than Andrew McFadyen and his partner, Tawny Robinson, who are arguably the best editor/director combo ever and for certain in the class. In fact, their “super film” is to be shown this Friday and is sure to be a fantastic piece of work.
Creating a Final Film is no easy task and is generally more stressful than an exam, as I’m sure many of my classmates would tell you. Almost anything can and will go wrong while you are filming and even if you make it through all of that alive, you must do a solid editing job to make your movie presentable.
You need to find actors, but enough actors that will make your film seem legit and yet without so many that it’s impossible to keep track of them. Not to mention everyone else had exams at the time. You must learn to deal with the weather, which can change from rain to snow in an instant and ruin the continuity of a project. Depending on how much footage you have, you will need to also take all of that and first chop it down before actually starting to use it.
And those are minor details. There have been many sleepless nights over media assignments and I’m sure there will continue to be. Everyone I know who drinks coffee drinks at least 3 more per morning during editing time. And if someone cannot find the song they need for the scene they are putting together, then there will be pandemonium.
But let’s not forget the fun parts during these camera-filled times. The blooper reels that come out of these classes are some of the most hilarious things ever caught on tape and would undoubtedly reach a million hits on YouTube if ever placed there. During long nights of editing, taking a break and going out for dinner with your friends is one of the best feelings ever and always leaves you rejuvenated. Sometimes there are even those idyllic moments when your scene and music match up perfectly without you even having to touch it. And then of course, there’s that special feeling when the film is finished.
Magic.
In short, these are just a few of the things experienced during my time as a student in room 32; a room I will likely never enter again as one of the names on the attendance sheet. The other students and I had a spectacular few weeks producing our Final Films that will live on in time for anyone to witness. However, I’m sure those who will see some of the greatest works out of the classroom, such as Chinzilla (see video left), will only get a small time to drool over them before Mr. Colley barks out one of his favourite sayings:
During a student council meeting, Grade 12 Student Janine Van Veghal and other student council members were discussing ideas for fundraisers for the 2012 school year. Janine blurted out "I really want to shave my head". So agreeing that it will be a great and fun fundraiser Janine will in-fact be shaving her head!! This event will only occur if the KDSS student population is able to raise $500, only then will Janine go bald!
What ever the final amount is once fundraising is done, Janine will be donating half to Kincardine Women's House and half to KDSS for Operation Re-Cool the School!
This amazing event will be taking place Thursday February 16th at noon in the cafe! Donation cans have been placed in the library, cafeteria and the main office!
